# The Best Time for an African Safari: A Month-by-Month Guide

*Every month covered: what you will find in the main safari countries, and what you will miss.*

*Published: 2026-10-27*

> **Quick answer:** There is no single best month, because somewhere in Africa is at its best every month of the year. As a rule, June to October is the classic dry season across East and southern Africa, with the easiest game viewing and the Masai Mara river crossings. January and February are best for the Serengeti calving. March to May is quieter and cheaper. Gorilla trekking runs all year, with June to August and December to January the driest months.

"When should we go?" is usually the second question we are asked, right after "where?". The two are linked. Africa does not have one safari season; each region has its own, driven by rain. Pick the right month for the right place and you will see more, pay less and share sightings with fewer vehicles.

This guide walks through the year in five blocks and covers Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, Botswana, South Africa and Namibia. For a broader overview of safari seasons, see our [best time for an African safari](/blogs/best-time-for-african-safari/) guide.

"Excellent" means peak game viewing; "green season" means wetter, quieter and usually cheaper, not bad.

## January and February: Calving Season

The big story in East Africa is the wildebeest calving on the southern Serengeti plains around Ndutu. Between late January and February, hundreds of thousands of calves are born in a few weeks. Predators gather, and cheetah hunts on the short grass are a regular sight. This is one of the best times of year for [Tanzania](/destinations/tanzania/), and the [Ngorongoro Crater](/destinations/ngorongoro-crater/), which is good year-round, sits right next door.

Kenya is pleasant too, with warm dry weather between the short and long rains, and [Amboseli](/destinations/amboseli-national-park/) often has clear views of Kilimanjaro. In Uganda and Rwanda, January is one of the drier months for gorilla trekking.

In southern Africa it is high summer. [Kruger](/destinations/kruger-national-park/) is green, hot and humid, with newborn impala and migrant birds. Botswana is in its green season, with the Delta’s water low and some camps offering good rates. In Namibia, summer rain can fill the Etosha Pan, drawing flamingos and other breeding water birds, and many antelope give birth.

> **package serengeti-classic:** Five nights in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, timed for the southern plains in calving season, from US$3,800 per person.

## March to May: The Quiet Season

These are the months many experienced safari-goers choose on purpose. In East Africa the long rains usually arrive in late March and run through May. Some camps close, roads can be muddy and afternoon storms are common. But rates are lower, the landscape is a deep green and you may have sightings to yourself.

Gorilla trekking continues, but the trails are wet and steep. In Botswana, the flood water from Angola begins arriving in the Okavango from around April, and by May the Delta is filling and the dry season is beginning. May is one of our favourite months for Kruger: the rains have stopped, the grass is starting to thin, and winter prices have not yet arrived. Namibia is also coming into its best months.

## June and July: The Dry Season Begins

From June, most of East and southern Africa is dry. Vegetation dies back, animals gather at water and game viewing gets easier by the week.

In Tanzania, the herds move through the western corridor, where the Grumeti River crossings happen around June, and by July they are reaching the Mara River in the north. In Uganda and Rwanda, June to August are the driest trekking months, and permits sell out early.

In Botswana, June and July are peak flood months in the [Okavango Delta](/destinations/okavango-delta/), the best time for mokoro and boat safaris while the surrounding bush dries out. Kruger and Namibia are at their best, with cold mornings and warm, clear days. Pack a proper jacket for early drives in southern Africa.

> **package gorilla-trekking-uganda:** Seven nights in Uganda with gorillas in Bwindi, chimpanzees in Kibale and savannah game, from US$4,800 per person.

## August to October: Peak Season

This is the classic safari window, and the most expensive. In Kenya, the [Masai Mara](/destinations/masai-mara/) hosts the herds and the dramatic Mara River crossings. Tanzania’s northern Serengeti sees the same crossings with fewer vehicles. Our [Great Migration safari](/safari-experiences/great-migration-safari/) page goes into timing in detail.

Across southern Africa, game viewing peaks as water becomes scarce. By October, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia are hot and dry, with huge herds of elephant around the remaining water. In [Etosha](/destinations/etosha-national-park/), the waterholes are busy day and night. Kruger is excellent until the first rains, usually in late October or November.

> **package mara-classic:** Four nights in the Masai Mara, best booked for the crossing months of July to October, from US$3,200 per person.

## November and December: Short Rains and New Life

In East Africa, the short rains arrive in November. Showers are usually brief, and the herds start moving south through the Serengeti towards the calving grounds. December is a pleasant time for Tanzania and Kenya, and a popular festive-season month, so book early.

Uganda and Rwanda dry out again from mid-December, making it a good time for gorillas. In southern Africa, the first rains turn the bush green almost overnight. Antelope give birth, migrant birds arrive and the light is beautiful. It is hot, but lodge rates fall in Botswana and Kruger, and the green season suits photographers and repeat visitors well.

## How to Use This Guide

Start with what matters most. If it is the migration, the calendar decides the country. If it is gorillas, most months work, but the dry months are easier on the legs. If it is the Big Five on a budget, Kruger in May or November is hard to beat. And if it is simply the best game viewing, aim for the dry season wherever you go.

> Every month is the right month somewhere in Africa. The trick is matching the place to the calendar, not the other way round.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the best month for an African safari overall?

If you want one month that works in almost every major safari country, choose August or September. It is dry in Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa and Namibia, the Mara river crossings are usually in full swing and the Okavango is still flooded. The catch is that it is also the busiest and most expensive time, so book a year ahead.

### Is the rainy season a bad time for safari?

Not necessarily. The green season brings lush landscapes, newborn animals, migrant birds and far fewer vehicles, and lodge rates can fall considerably. Rain usually comes as afternoon storms rather than all-day downpours. The exception is the long rains in East Africa, roughly April and May, when some camps close and roads can be difficult.

### When can I see the wildebeest river crossings?

Usually between July and October, along the Mara River in Kenya’s Masai Mara and Tanzania’s northern Serengeti. Crossings depend on rain and the herds’ movements, so no month is guaranteed. August and September are normally the most reliable.

### When is the best time for gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda runs all year. The drier months, June to August and December to January, make the trails less muddy and easier underfoot. The wetter months bring fewer trekkers and, in Uganda, sometimes discounted permits, but you should expect rain and slippery slopes.

### When is the Okavango Delta flooded?

The flood water arrives from the Angolan highlands months after the rain falls there. It usually reaches the Delta from around April and peaks between June and August, when mokoro and boat safaris are at their best. Botswana’s main safari season runs from May to October.

### When is the cheapest time to go on safari?

The green season, which in East Africa is roughly March to May and in southern Africa roughly November to March. Many lodges offer lower rates or free nights at these times. The shoulder months, such as late May, June and November, often combine good game viewing with better prices.
