# The Best Time for an African Safari: A Month-by-Month Guide

*From the Great Migration to the green season, here is exactly when to go on safari in every major destination across Africa.*

*Published: 2026-10-10*

> **Quick answer:** For most of Africa’s classic safari destinations, the best time to go is the dry season, roughly June to October, when vegetation thins and animals gather at water. That window covers South Africa’s Kruger, Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Great Migration river crossings in Kenya’s Maasai Mara (about July to October). January to February is the time for the migration calving season in Tanzania’s southern Serengeti, while November to March, the green season, brings newborn animals, superb birding, dramatic scenery and lower prices across southern Africa.

Ask ten safari experts when the best time is to go on safari and you will probably hear ten slightly different answers. That is because there is no single best time for Africa. The continent spans both hemispheres and several climate zones, so while one region is enjoying its finest game viewing, another is in the middle of its rains.

The good news is that this means there is a superb safari to be had somewhere in Africa in every month of the year. The key is matching the destination to your dates, or your dates to the experience you dream of. This guide explains how the safari seasons work, what to expect in each major destination and, month by month, where we would send you.

## Understanding Africa's Safari Seasons

Before looking at individual destinations, it helps to understand the two seasons that shape almost every safari: the dry season and the wet, or green, season.

### The dry season

In most of southern and East Africa, the dry season runs roughly from June to October. Very little rain falls, grass dies back and many trees lose their leaves. As waterholes and seasonal rivers dry up, animals are forced to gather at permanent water sources. Thinner vegetation and predictable gatherings make wildlife much easier to find, which is why the dry season is considered the peak safari season.

The trade-offs are higher prices, more visitors in popular areas and dusty landscapes. Early mornings can be surprisingly cold in southern Africa, so warm layers are essential.

### The wet or green season

The rains generally arrive between November and April in southern Africa, while East Africa has two rainy periods: the long rains around March to May and the shorter rains around November and December. Rain transforms the landscape, bringing fresh grass, flowering trees and an explosion of life.

Many herbivores give birth at the start of the rains, migratory birds arrive in their thousands and the light is spectacular. Animals spread out because water is everywhere, so they can be harder to find, and some remote camps close. But rates are lower, the bush is quieter and the photography is often extraordinary.

### Shoulder seasons

The months between seasons, such as May, early June and November, are often the sweet spot. Rates may still be reduced while game viewing is improving or remains excellent. If you are flexible, the shoulder seasons offer some of the best value in African travel.

| Season | Typical months (southern Africa) | Best for | Trade-offs |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Dry season | June to October | Peak game viewing, predators at water | Higher rates, busier, cold mornings |
| Green season | November to April | Newborn animals, birds, lush scenery, value | Heat, storms, thicker bush |
| Shoulder | May and November | Good wildlife, softer prices | Weather can be variable |

## The Best Time to Visit Each Safari Destination

### South Africa: Kruger and Sabi Sands

South Africa's Greater Kruger region is a genuine year-round destination. The dry winter months from May to September offer the classic safari experience, with thin vegetation and animals concentrated around rivers and dams. September and October are the hottest and driest months, and often the most productive for game viewing before the first rains.

The green season from November to March brings lush scenery, newborn impala, wildebeest and zebra, dramatic thunderstorms and outstanding birding. Many private lodges offer attractive green season rates. ### South Africa: Western Cape and Cape Town

The Western Cape has a Mediterranean climate, the opposite of the summer rainfall region in the north-east. Summer, from November to March, is dry, sunny and warm, perfect for beaches, Table Mountain and the Winelands. Winter, from June to August, is cooler and wetter but the landscape turns emerald green, and it is a fine time for wine, food and cosy lodges.

Between roughly June and November, southern right whales visit the coast to calve, and the town of Hermanus offers some of the best land-based whale watching in the world. Malaria-free private reserves within reach of Cape Town make it easy to add a game drive in any season.

### Kenya: Maasai Mara

The Maasai Mara is world-famous for the Great Migration river crossings, which typically take place between July and October as huge herds of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River, running the gauntlet of crocodiles. This is peak season and the Mara is at its busiest.

Outside migration season, the Mara still offers outstanding resident wildlife, especially big cats, at lower prices. January and February are dry, warm and excellent. The long rains around April and May bring the quietest period of the year.

### Tanzania: Serengeti and Ngorongoro

Tanzania's Serengeti hosts the Great Migration for most of the year, so the right timing depends on where you stay. Around January to March, the herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area to give birth, attracting large numbers of predators. Around May to July, the herds move through the western corridor and the Grumeti River area. From roughly July to October, they are in the far northern Serengeti near the Mara River.

The Ngorongoro Crater, with its permanent water and resident wildlife, is excellent all year round. Tarangire National Park is at its best in the dry season, when vast numbers of elephants gather along the Tarangire River.

### Botswana: Okavango Delta, Chobe and the Kalahari

Botswana is a country of beautiful contradictions. The Okavango Delta floods during the dry season: rain that falls in the Angolan highlands in summer takes months to flow south, so the flood waters typically peak in the Delta around June to August. This combination of water and dry surroundings draws wildlife in from the surrounding areas and creates the classic delta safari, with mokoro canoe trips through papyrus channels.

Chobe National Park is famous for its huge elephant herds along the Chobe River in the dry season, from about June to October. In contrast, the Central Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans come alive in the green season, from about December to March, when rains bring zebra and wildebeest migrations and excellent predator activity.

### Zambia: South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi

Zambia is the birthplace of the walking safari and is at its best in the dry season from June to October, when the Luangwa River shrinks and wildlife concentrates on its banks. Many bush camps operate only in the dry season, as roads become impassable during the rains. In the green season, a handful of camps remain open for boat safaris and spectacular birding.

### Zimbabwe: Hwange, Mana Pools and Victoria Falls

Zimbabwe's national parks follow the classic southern African pattern, with the best game viewing in the dry months from roughly July to October. Hwange is known for its large elephant herds, and Mana Pools offers some of the most exciting walking and canoeing safaris on the continent.

[Victoria Falls](/destinations/victoria-falls-zimbabwe/) has its own rhythm. The Zambezi River is at its highest from around March to May, when the volume of water is staggering and the spray, known locally as the smoke that thunders, rises high into the sky. From about August to December the flow drops, offering clearer views of the rock face and, on the Zambian side, the chance to swim at the very edge of the Falls when water levels are low enough and conditions are safe.

### Namibia: Etosha and the desert

Namibia is a dry country, and its main wildlife destination, Etosha National Park, is at its best in the dry season from about June to October, when animals gather at its floodlit waterholes in remarkable numbers. The desert regions, including Sossusvlei, can be visited year-round, although midsummer daytime temperatures are very high.

### Rwanda and Uganda: gorilla trekking

Mountain gorilla trekking is possible all year, but the drier seasons, roughly June to September and December to February, make the hike through forested mountain slopes easier and more comfortable. Rain can fall at any time in these high-altitude rainforests, so waterproof clothing is essential whenever you go. Permits are limited, so plan well ahead.

## Month-by-Month: Where to Go on Safari

Use this table as a quick reference for planning. It reflects typical seasonal patterns; weather and wildlife movements vary from year to year.

## The Safari Year in Detail

The table gives you the headline picks. Here is a closer look at what each month feels like on the ground, so you can picture your days in the bush.

### January

The southern African summer is in full swing. Kruger and the Sabi Sands are deep green, impala lambs are a few weeks old and the bush rings with birdsong. Afternoon storms roll in with spectacular cloudscapes, usually clearing in time for a sundowner. In Tanzania, the migration herds are gathering on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti, and the first calves arrive. Cape Town enjoys long, hot beach days.

### February

February is the heart of the Serengeti calving season, when thousands of wildebeest calves can be born in a short window, attracting lion, cheetah and hyena in impressive numbers. In southern Africa, the green season continues with excellent rates at many private lodges. It is a superb month for photographers who love lush backdrops and dramatic light, and for travellers pairing a safari with the Cape Winelands harvest season.

### March

Rains begin to ease in parts of southern Africa while the Zambezi rises, so Victoria Falls grows more powerful by the week. Kruger is quiet and green, and late calving continues in the Serengeti. March is one of the most underrated safari months: rates are low, vehicles are few and the scenery is at its most beautiful.

### April

East Africa enters its long rains, and some camps in Kenya and Tanzania close or reduce rates. In southern Africa the weather becomes milder and the bush begins its slow change from green to gold. Victoria Falls approaches its peak flow, an astonishing sight, although the spray can make views of the full width of the Falls hazy. Easter holidays bring local visitors to Kruger, so book early.

### May

May is a classic shoulder month and one of our favourites. Days in Kruger are warm and clear, nights are cool and the grass begins to thin, making game viewing steadily easier. Many lodges still offer shoulder season rates. Victoria Falls is in full flood. In Tanzania, the migration herds start to move west through the central Serengeti.

### June

The dry season arrives across southern Africa. Mornings on open game drives are crisp, so blankets and hot water bottles become part of the routine. The flood waters reach the Okavango Delta, transforming it into a maze of channels and lagoons. Gorilla trekking season in Rwanda and Uganda enters its drier phase. Whale season begins along the Cape coast.

### July

Peak season begins in earnest. The Okavango Delta is at or near its flood peak, Kruger's bush is thinning fast and predators are increasingly drawn to waterholes. The first herds of the Great Migration may reach the Mara River, although the timing varies every year. South African school holidays fall around this time, so popular rest camps book out well ahead.

### August

August is the month we most often recommend to travellers who can only travel once and want to maximise their chances across many destinations. The weather is dry and pleasant, wildlife is concentrated, the Mara is usually busy with migrating herds and the Delta is full of water. In the Western Cape, early spring flowers begin to appear along the West Coast.

### September

The driest stretch of the year in much of southern Africa makes September exceptional for game viewing. Water is scarce, so elephants, buffalo and predators converge on rivers and pans in remarkable numbers. Zambia's South Luangwa and Zimbabwe's Hwange and Mana Pools are at their best. Temperatures climb as the month goes on, so midday rest periods become more important.

### October

October is hot, dry and dramatic. In Kruger and the Sabi Sands, sightings at waterholes can be outstanding, and the first rains may arrive late in the month, bringing relief and a sudden flush of green. Victoria Falls is at low flow, revealing the sculpted basalt gorge. It is an excellent month for serious wildlife enthusiasts who do not mind the heat.

### November

The rains return to southern Africa, and with them the first impala lambs, migrant birds and fresh green grass. Rates begin to fall at many lodges, and the light becomes soft and clear after the dusty months. Cape Town's summer season begins, making November an ideal month for a combined city and safari journey. In East Africa, the short rains bring the migration herds south again.

### December

December is festive and green. Southern Africa's private reserves are lush and full of young animals, and birding is outstanding. The migration herds arrive back in the southern Serengeti. The mid-December to early January holiday period is busy across South Africa, particularly in Cape Town and Kruger, so book well ahead if you plan to travel over Christmas and New Year.

## Combining Destinations by Season

Many of the most rewarding safaris combine two or three destinations whose best seasons overlap. These pairings work especially well.

| Travel window | Combination | Why it works |
| --- | --- | --- |
| November to March | Cape Town and Sabi Sands | Cape summer plus green season safari value |
| May to June | Kruger and Victoria Falls | Shoulder season safari plus Falls at full power |
| July to September | Kruger and the Okavango Delta | Prime dry season plus the Delta in flood |
| August to October | Maasai Mara and Cape Town | Migration river crossings plus whale season in the Cape |
| December to February | Southern Serengeti and Zanzibar or Mozambique | Calving season plus a beach finale |

## The Great Migration: Timing It Right

The Great Migration is often described as the greatest wildlife show on earth. More than a million wildebeest, accompanied by zebra and gazelle, follow the rains in a vast, continuous loop through Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara. Because it is driven by rainfall, timing shifts slightly every year.

| Period | Where the herds usually are | What happens |
| --- | --- | --- |
| December to March | Southern Serengeti and Ndutu | Calving season; intense predator action |
| April to May | Central Serengeti | Herds begin moving north and west |
| June to July | Western corridor and Grumeti | Grumeti River crossings |
| July to October | Northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara | Dramatic Mara River crossings |
| November | Moving south through the Serengeti | Short rains return; herds head for the southern plains |

> **Seeing the river crossings:** River crossings are unpredictable. Herds can gather on the riverbank for hours or days before crossing, or turn back entirely. Plan at least three or four nights in the right area to give yourself a strong chance of witnessing one, and choose a camp close to the crossing points.

## Choosing the Right Time for Your Priorities

### For first-time safari travellers

The dry season, from June to October, offers the most reliable game viewing and is ideal for a first safari. South Africa's Kruger and Sabi Sands are superb choices, easily combined with Cape Town and Victoria Falls.

### For photographers

The green season offers lush backdrops, dramatic skies, beautiful light and newborn animals. The late dry season offers dusty golden light and big concentrations of wildlife. Both are excellent; it depends on the images you want to create.

### For birders

Southern Africa's green season, from November to March, is unbeatable. Migrant species arrive, resident birds are in breeding plumage and the bush is alive with song.

### For families

School holidays often dictate family travel. Malaria-free destinations in South Africa, such as the private reserves near Cape Town and the Pilanesberg in North West Province, are excellent at any time of year and ideal for younger children. Our [Pilanesberg two-day tented safari](/tours/2-day1-night-pilanesberg-tented-safari-tour/) is a perfect short family adventure within easy reach of Johannesburg.

### For honeymooners

Honeymooners often combine a safari with beach or city time. A dry season safari in Kruger followed by a few days in Cape Town or a Mozambican island makes a classic pairing. In the green season, a Sabi Sands lodge with a private plunge pool and Cape Town in full summer is equally romantic.

### For travellers on a budget

Look at the green and shoulder seasons, when many lodges reduce their rates and offer stay-longer specials. Self-drive safaris in Kruger are excellent value at any time of year. Our [African safari cost guide](/blogs/african-safari-cost-guide/) explains how to stretch your budget further.

## Weather on Safari: What to Expect

| Region | Dry season days | Dry season mornings | Green season |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Kruger and Sabi Sands | Warm and sunny | Cold, especially June to July | Hot, humid, afternoon storms |
| Okavango Delta | Warm | Cold, can be near freezing in midwinter | Hot with storms |
| Maasai Mara and Serengeti | Warm and pleasant | Cool | Warm with showers; long rains around April to May |
| Victoria Falls | Warm, very hot by October | Mild | Hot with storms |
| Cape Town | Cool, rainy in winter | Cold | Warm, dry and sunny summer |

### What to pack for each season

Safari packing is less about the calendar and more about layers. Even in the warmest months, an open game-drive vehicle moving at dawn can feel surprisingly cool, and in the dry-season winter of Southern Africa early mornings can be genuinely cold.

- **Dry season (roughly May to October in Southern Africa):** a warm fleece or down jacket, a beanie and gloves for early drives, plus light layers for the warm middle of the day. Many lodges provide blankets and hot-water bottles in the vehicles, but your own layers make a real difference.
- **Green season (roughly November to April in Southern Africa):** lightweight, breathable clothing, a compact rain jacket, a wide-brimmed hat and plenty of sunscreen. Afternoon storms usually pass quickly, and the light afterwards is beautiful for photography.
- **All year:** neutral colours such as khaki, olive and stone, comfortable closed shoes, sunglasses, insect repellent, a good pair of binoculars and a soft-sided bag, since light aircraft transfers often have strict luggage rules.

### Malaria and the seasons

Malaria risk in safari areas is generally higher during the warm, wet months, when mosquitoes breed in standing water, and lower in the cool, dry months. Parts of Kruger and the wider Lowveld fall within a malaria area, while reserves such as Pilanesberg, Madikwe and the Eastern Cape reserves are considered low risk or malaria-free. Always speak to a travel health professional about the right precautions for your itinerary and dates. If you are travelling with young children or would prefer to avoid antimalarial medication, a malaria-free reserve combined with Cape Town is an excellent choice in any season.

## How Far Ahead Should You Book?

The best lodges and camps have a limited number of rooms, often as few as eight or ten, and the most sought-after properties fill up a year in advance for peak season. As a guideline:

- **Peak season (July to October):** book nine to twelve months ahead.
- **Great Migration river crossing camps:** book twelve months or more ahead.
- **Gorilla permits:** book as early as possible, especially for peak months.
- **Green season:** three to six months ahead is often enough.
- **Festive season (mid-December to early January):** book well ahead, as South African holiday-makers travel too.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the best month for an African safari?

If you had to choose a single month, August or September works brilliantly across most of the continent: it is dry season in southern Africa, the Great Migration is usually in the Maasai Mara and the Okavango Delta is flooded. That said, every month of the year is excellent somewhere in Africa.

### When is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is a year-round cycle rather than a single event. Calving takes place in the southern Serengeti around January to March, the herds move through the central and western Serengeti from about April to June, and the dramatic Mara River crossings typically happen between July and October before the herds return south in November and December. Exact timing varies with the rains each year.

### Is the rainy season a bad time for a safari?

Not at all. The green season brings lush landscapes, newborn animals, migratory birds, fewer vehicles and lower rates. Rain usually falls in short afternoon storms rather than all day. Some remote camps close during the heaviest rains, but destinations such as Kruger, the Sabi Sands and the Serengeti calving plains are rewarding during the wet months.

### When is the best time to see Victoria Falls?

Victoria Falls is at its most powerful at the end of the rainy season, roughly March to May, when the spray can be seen from kilometres away. From around August to December water levels drop, giving clearer views and the chance to swim in pools at the edge of the Falls on the Zambian side when conditions allow.

### When is the best time for gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda is possible all year, but the drier months, roughly June to September and December to February, offer easier hiking conditions on the forested slopes. Permits are limited, so book early for these periods.

### What is the best time to combine a safari with Cape Town?

Cape Town is at its best in the dry, sunny summer from November to March, which pairs beautifully with a green season safari in Kruger or the Sabi Sands. For a dry season safari between June and October, you will find Cape Town cooler and greener, with the bonus of whale watching along the coast.

### Is it cheaper to go on safari in the low season?

Yes. Many lodges reduce their rates in the green or shoulder seasons, sometimes significantly, and some offer stay-longer specials. Shoulder months such as May, June and November often deliver excellent wildlife at more attractive prices.

### How far in advance should I book a safari?

For peak season, particularly July to October, we recommend booking nine to twelve months ahead, especially for smaller luxury camps, gorilla permits and migration river crossing camps. For green season travel, three to six months is often sufficient.
