# How Much Does a Kruger Safari Cost in 2026?

*Park fees, lodge rates, flights and the real price of a Big Five safari in the Greater Kruger, from bushcamp to private concession.*

*Published: 2026-10-15*

> **Quick answer:** A Kruger safari in 2026 costs from about US$150 per person per night if you self-drive and stay in national park rest camps, to US$450 to US$900 per night at a mid-range private-reserve lodge, and US$1,500 or more per night at the top luxury lodges. International visitors pay a daily conservation fee of R602 per adult until 31 October 2026, rising to R692 from 1 November 2026. Our guided Greater Kruger packages start at US$1,450 per person for three nights at a bushcamp, all meals and game drives included.

Kruger is where most people meet Africa for the first time, and for good reason. Nearly two million hectares of bushveld, all of the Big Five, tarred roads, a major airport on the doorstep and a range of places to stay that runs from a R500 campsite to a glass-walled suite on a cliff above the N'wanetsi River.

That range is exactly why the price question is so confusing. Two travellers can both say "we did Kruger" and have spent ten times more or less than each other. This guide breaks down what a Kruger safari really costs in 2026, line by line, so you can see where the money goes and choose the style that suits you.

> **How we quote prices:** All prices are approximate, per person sharing, in US dollars unless shown in rand. Lodge rates move with season and exchange rates. Kasi Africa Safari package prices are our published rates at the time of writing.

## Kruger National Park Fees in 2026

Every visitor to Kruger National Park pays a daily conservation fee. The money funds anti-poaching work, habitat management and community programmes, and it is charged per person for each day you are in the park.

| Period | International adult | International child (2 to 11) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 Nov 2025 to 31 Oct 2026 | R602 per day | R300 per day |
| 1 Nov 2026 to 31 Oct 2027 | R692 per day | R345 per day |

A 1% community levy is added, and gates are largely cashless, so carry a card. If you are planning a long self-drive trip, the SANParks Wild Card can work out cheaper than paying daily fees.

Private reserves on Kruger's western boundary, such as Timbavati, Klaserie, Karongwe and the Sabi Sands, charge their own conservation and gate levies. Most lodges build these into their rates, which is one reason private-reserve prices look higher at first glance.

## Self-Drive Kruger: The Budget Option

Self-driving is the cheapest way to see the Big Five anywhere in Africa. A realistic budget for two people looks something like this.

| Item | Approx. cost |
| --- | --- |
| Rental car (compact SUV) | US$45 to US$80 per day |
| Rest camp bungalow for two | R1,400 to R3,200 per night |
| Conservation fees, 2 adults | R1,204 per day until 31 Oct 2026 |
| Fuel | US$15 to US$30 per day |
| Food and drinks | US$30 to US$60 per person per day |
| Guided sunset or night drive (optional) | R500 to R800 per person |

The trade-off is that you do all the finding yourself, you share sightings with many other cars and you must stay on the roads. For confident travellers on a second or third safari, it is a wonderful adventure. First-timers often see far more with a ranger and tracker.

## Private Reserve Lodges: Where Most Guests Stay

The Greater Kruger private reserves share unfenced borders with the national park, so the animals move freely between them. What changes is how you experience them. Vehicles can leave the road to follow a leopard, sightings are limited to a few vehicles at a time, night drives with a spotlight are standard, and you head out with a ranger and a tracker who read the bush for a living.

Rates at private lodges are almost always all-inclusive: accommodation, meals, two game drives a day, a guided walk, and often local drinks and house wines.

### Budget bushcamps

Small, owner-run bushcamps give you the full private-reserve experience at a fair price. Think reed-and-thatch chalets lit by paraffin lamps, dinners around the fire and the same quality of game viewing as lodges costing three times as much.

> **package big-five-safari-budget:** Three nights at an unfenced Timbavati bushcamp with lion, leopard and elephant on the doorstep. Our most affordable Big Five safari.

### Classic private lodges

This is the sweet spot for most couples and families. Comfortable riverside suites, a swimming pool, excellent guiding and a little more space between you and the next guest.

> **package kruger-classic:** Four nights at Karongwe River Lodge with twice-daily Big Five drives, a guided bush walk and a boma dinner.

### Luxury lodges in the Sabi Sands and private concessions

The Sabi Sands is famous for leopard sightings, and many of its lodges are among the best in Africa. Prices climb steeply here, but so does the experience: tracking on foot, private plunge pools, wine cellars and guiding of the very highest standard. ## Getting There: Flights and Transfers

Most guests fly into one of three airports.

| Airport | Best for | Approx. one-way from Johannesburg |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Kruger Mpumalanga International (Nelspruit) | Southern Kruger, Sabi Sands | US$120 to US$220 |
| Hoedspruit Eastgate | Timbavati, Klaserie, Karongwe, Thornybush | US$150 to US$250 |
| Skukuza | Sabi Sands and southern Kruger | US$180 to US$300 |

Road transfers from the airport to your lodge are often included in our packages. Light-aircraft charters straight to a lodge airstrip save time and add roughly US$300 to US$700 per person per leg. Driving from Johannesburg takes about five to six hours and is the cheapest option.

## What a Kruger Safari Really Costs: Three Sample Budgets

Here are three realistic examples for one person sharing, excluding international flights.

### Four nights, smart value

Three nights at a Timbavati bushcamp, a return flight from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit and transfers. Expect around US$1,900 to US$2,300 per person, all meals and activities included.

### Five nights, the classic

Four nights at a riverside private lodge plus one night in Johannesburg, flights and transfers. Expect around US$2,500 to US$3,200 per person.

### Eight nights, the grand Kruger

Four nights at a luxury Sabi Sands lodge and three nights inside a private concession of Kruger National Park, linked by charter flight. Expect US$9,800 or more per person.

> **package kruger-ultimate:** Seven nights combining Singita Boulders in the Sabi Sands with Singita Lebombo in the Kruger, connected by private charter.

## Hidden Costs to Budget For

- **Gratuities.** Rangers, trackers and lodge staff are tipped at the end of your stay.
- **Premium drinks.** Most lodges include house wines and local beer, but imported spirits and champagne are extra.
- **Malaria precautions.** The Kruger area is a low-risk malaria zone. Ask a travel clinic about prophylaxis.
- **Travel insurance.** Make sure it covers medical evacuation.
- **Curios and spa treatments.** Easy to underestimate.

## How to Get More Safari for Your Money

### Travel in the shoulder months

May, early June and November often bring lower rates with excellent game viewing. Many lodges offer a free fourth night or stay-longer specials outside peak season.

### Stay three nights or more

Changing lodges every night eats into game-drive time and adds transfer costs. Three nights in one place is the minimum we recommend.

### Mix your styles

Start with a well-priced bushcamp and finish with two nights at a luxury lodge. You get both sides of the safari world for much less than a full luxury trip.

> **package big-five-safari-premium:** Five nights in the Sabi Sands at Savanna Private Game Reserve, one of the best places in Africa for leopard.

> The best Kruger safari is not the most expensive one. It is the one where you are in the right reserve, at the right time of year, with the right guide.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much is the Kruger National Park entrance fee for international visitors?

International visitors pay a daily conservation fee of R602 per adult and R300 per child (2 to 11 years) for the period 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026. From 1 November 2026 the fee rises to R692 per adult and R345 per child. A small community levy is added. Private reserves in the Greater Kruger charge their own conservation levies, which lodges usually include in the rate.

### What is the cheapest way to do a Kruger safari?

Self-driving through Kruger National Park and staying in SANParks rest camps is the most affordable option. You pay for the car, the bungalow or campsite, food and the daily conservation fee. Guided game drives from the rest camps can be booked separately.

### How much does a 3-night Kruger safari cost?

Three nights at a small bushcamp in a private reserve such as Timbavati starts at about US$1,450 per person sharing, including meals, game drives and walks. Three nights at a top luxury lodge can cost US$6,000 to US$9,000 per person or more.

### Is a private reserve worth the extra money over Kruger National Park?

For most first-time visitors, yes. Private reserves limit the number of vehicles at each sighting, allow off-road tracking and night drives, and include expert rangers and trackers. The national park is excellent value but busier, and you stay on public roads.

### When is the cheapest time to visit Kruger?

The green season from about November to March usually brings the lowest lodge rates and many stay-longer specials. The dry winter months of June to October offer the easiest game viewing and the highest prices.

### How much should I tip on a Kruger safari?

Many guests tip their ranger and tracker per guest per day and add a contribution to the general staff tip box at the end of the stay. Your Kasi consultant will share current guidelines for your lodge.
