# How Much Does a Masai Mara Safari Cost in 2026?

*Park fees, conservancy camps, bush flights and the true price of seeing the Great Migration in Kenya.*

*Published: 2026-10-15*

> **Quick answer:** A Masai Mara safari in 2026 costs from about US$350 per person per night at a simple camp inside the reserve to US$700 to US$1,200 at a mid-range or conservancy camp, and US$1,500 or more at the top luxury camps. International adults pay a reserve fee of US$200 per 12-hour visit from July to December and US$100 from January to June. Our Masai Mara packages start at US$3,200 per person for four nights with meals, game drives and park fees.

The Masai Mara is the Africa of the imagination. Golden grassland, lone acacias, black-maned lions and, from July to October, a river of wildebeest and zebra pouring across the Mara River with crocodiles waiting below.

It is also one of the most talked-about safaris when it comes to price. Park fees went up in 2025, migration season fills the best camps a year ahead, and the choice between the national reserve and the private conservancies changes your budget considerably. Here is what a Masai Mara safari really costs in 2026, and how to get the most from every dollar.

> **How we quote prices:** All prices are approximate, per person sharing, in US dollars. Camp rates change with season. Kasi Africa Safari package prices are our published rates at the time of writing.

## Masai Mara Safari Costs at a Glance

| Safari style | Approx. per person per night (USD) | What you get |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Budget camp, shared vehicle | 250 to 400 | Simple tents, set meals, shared game drives |
| Classic tented camp in the reserve | 400 to 700 | En-suite tents, all meals, game drives |
| Conservancy camp | 700 to 1,200 | Fewer vehicles, night drives, walks, Maasai guides |
| Luxury camp or lodge | 1,200 to 2,500 | Private vehicles, plunge pools, fine dining |

## Masai Mara Reserve Fees in 2026

The biggest single change to Mara budgets in recent years is the reserve fee. Narok County, which manages the Masai Mara National Reserve, introduced new rates in 2025 that remain in place for 2026.

| Season | Non-resident adult | Child 9 to 17 | Child under 9 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Peak, 1 July to 31 December | US$200 per visit | US$50 | Free |
| Low, 1 January to 30 June | US$100 per visit | US$50 | Free |

Each ticket covers one visit of up to 12 hours, from 6am to 6pm. If you stay at a camp inside the reserve for four nights in August, park fees alone come to about US$800 per adult. This is why a Mara safari in the green season can cost noticeably less for the same camp.

Private conservancies bordering the reserve, such as Olare Motorogi, Mara North and Olderkesi, charge their own daily conservation fees instead. These go directly to the Maasai families who lease their land for wildlife, and most camps include them in the nightly rate.

## Reserve or Conservancy?

This is the most important decision on a Mara safari, and it shapes both your experience and your budget.

### Inside the national reserve

Camps inside the reserve put you closest to the famous river crossing points along the Mara River and Talek River. Rates can be lower, but you share sightings with other vehicles, you must stay on the tracks and night drives are not allowed.

> **package mara-classic:** Four nights at Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp, on a private concession beside the Mara Triangle, with daily game drives and park fees.

### In a private conservancy

Conservancies cap the number of beds and vehicles, so a lion sighting is often yours alone. You can drive off-road, track with a spotlight after dark and walk with Maasai guides. The trade-off is a higher rate, and the drive into the main reserve for crossings can take an hour or more.

## Migration Season Prices

The herds usually arrive in the Mara in July and stay until about October, moving back and forth across the river as the rains shift. This is peak season in every sense.

| Period | What is happening | Price level |
| --- | --- | --- |
| January to March | Short dry season, resident big cats, herds in the Serengeti | Moderate |
| April to May | Long rains, lush and quiet, some camps close | Lowest |
| June | Herds on the move north, rates still fair | Moderate |
| July to October | Great Migration and river crossings | Highest |
| November to December | Short rains, green landscapes | Moderate |

> Book July to September crossing camps nine to twelve months ahead. The best camps on the river are often full a year in advance.

> **package great-migration-safari-crossing:** Six nights timed for the river crossings, with long days on the Mara River and full-day game drives.

## Getting There: Flights and Road Transfers

Almost every Mara safari starts in Nairobi.

| Option | Time | Approx. cost |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Scheduled bush flight from Wilson Airport | 45 to 75 minutes | US$250 to US$450 one way |
| Private road transfer | 5 to 6 hours | Often included in packages |
| Private charter | About 1 hour | From US$2,500 per plane |

Bush flights have a soft-bag luggage limit of about 15kg including hand luggage, so pack light.

## Sample Masai Mara Budgets

Here are three realistic examples for one person sharing, excluding international flights.

### Four nights, smart value

A classic tented camp in the reserve between January and June, with road transfers and the lower reserve fee. Expect around US$2,200 to US$3,200.

### Five nights, the conservancy safari

A night in Nairobi, then four nights in a private conservancy with bush flights. Expect around US$5,000 to US$6,500 in peak season.

> **package mara-conservancy:** Five nights at Angama Mara, perched on the Oloololo Escarpment with sweeping views across the Mara Triangle.

### Six nights, the full luxury Mara

Six nights at a top conservancy camp with a balloon flight, private vehicle and bush dinners. Expect US$8,000 or more.

> **package mara-balloon-luxury:** Six nights at Cottar's 1920s Camp in the Olderkesi Conservancy, including a sunrise balloon safari over the plains.

## Extra Costs to Plan For

- **Hot-air balloon safari.** Around US$450 to US$550 per person.
- **Maasai village visit.** Usually a fee paid directly to the community.
- **Gratuities.** Guides and camp staff are tipped at the end of your stay.
- **Kenya entry.** Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, applied for online before travel.
- **Travel insurance with medical evacuation.** Essential for remote camps.

## How to Save on a Masai Mara Safari

### Go in the green season

Between January and June, the reserve fee halves and many camps drop their rates. Resident lions, cheetahs and leopards stay all year.

### Stay longer in one camp

Three or four nights in one camp reduces flight costs and gives your guide time to find the special sightings.

### Pair with the Serengeti or the coast

Combining the Mara with Tanzania or a few days on the Indian Ocean often makes the long-haul flight better value. Read our [best time for an African safari](/blogs/best-time-for-african-safari/) guide to time it right.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much is the Masai Mara park fee in 2026?

Non-resident adults pay US$200 per person per 12-hour visit in the peak season from 1 July to 31 December and US$100 in the low season from 1 January to 30 June. Children aged 9 to 17 pay US$50, and children under 9 are free. A ticket is valid from 6am to 6pm.

### Is the Masai Mara expensive?

It can be, mainly because of park fees and bush flights. The good news is that most camp rates are all-inclusive, so once you arrive, meals, game drives and often drinks are covered. Travelling between January and June halves the reserve fee and lowers many camp rates.

### When is the cheapest time to visit the Masai Mara?

April and May, the long rains, bring the lowest rates and some camps close. January to March and early June are excellent value with good game viewing. July to October, the migration season, is the most expensive time.

### Are conservancies worth the extra cost?

For many guests, yes. Private conservancies limit the number of vehicles, allow night drives, walking safaris and off-road driving, and their fees support Maasai landowners directly. You can still drive into the main reserve for the river crossings.

### How much does a hot-air balloon safari over the Mara cost?

A sunrise balloon flight with a champagne bush breakfast usually costs around US$450 to US$550 per person. Book early for the migration months.

### Should I fly or drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara?

Driving takes five to six hours on a mix of tar and rough road and saves money. A scheduled light-aircraft flight takes about 45 minutes to an hour and gives you an extra half day in the bush.
