Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago is one of the last places in the western Indian Ocean where a viable population of dugongs survives, protected within a national park.

The perfect African balance

Early-morning game drives, late-night lion calls and the thrill of the chase are exhilarating, and they leave you happily tired. There is no better way to end a safari than with warm sand, turquoise water and absolutely nothing on the schedule.

A beach and bush safari pairs the energy of the wild with the restorative calm of the coast. It is one of the most popular journeys we design, especially for honeymooners and families.

The magic lies in the logistics. Short regional flights link Africa's great reserves with the islands and coastlines of the Indian Ocean, so you can move from a game drive to a sunset dhow cruise in a single day.

Elephants crossing the savanna in warm afternoon light
After days on the savanna, the coast offers the perfect place to slow down and reflect.

Classic combinations

The Greater Kruger and Mozambique pairing is among the most seamless. Fly from the Kruger region to the Bazaruto Archipelago or Vilanculos for coral reefs, dhow sailing and some of the finest diving in Africa.

From the Serengeti, Zanzibar is a short flight away, with its spice farms, the historic alleys of Stone Town and powder-white beaches. Kenya's Masai Mara pairs beautifully with Diani Beach or the Lamu Archipelago, while a Botswana or Kruger safari can be combined with the Seychelles or Mauritius for ultimate island luxury.

“Dawn with lions, sunset on the Indian Ocean. Africa is one of the few places on Earth where both fit into a single day.”
Kasi Africa Safari

When to travel

The dry season from May to October offers the finest game viewing and coincides with pleasant, dry weather along most of the coast. Humpback whales pass along the Mozambican coast from around July to October.

The Seychelles and Mauritius are year-round destinations, with calmer seas in the transitional months of April, May, October and November.

How we plan your beach and bush journey

We recommend safari first, then beach, so you finish your holiday fully rested. We plan your flight connections, choose lodges and island retreats that suit your style, and handle every transfer in between.

Whether you want barefoot simplicity or a private island villa, we tailor the balance of bush and beach to you.

Beach & Bush Safari: frequently asked questions

We recommend 10 to 14 nights, typically four to six nights on safari and four to seven nights at the beach.

We usually recommend the safari first. Game drives start early and can be tiring, so ending on the beach lets you relax completely before flying home.

The Greater Kruger with Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago or Mauritius are the most seamless, with short regional flight connections.

May to October offers excellent game viewing and dry coastal weather. The islands of the Indian Ocean can be enjoyed all year.

It is one of the most popular honeymoon itineraries we design, balancing adventure and romance with complete relaxation.

Your Journey, Day by Day

  1. Fly from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit and transfer to a private reserve in the Greater Kruger. Twice-daily game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, guided bush walks and a night drive reveal the full spectrum of African wildlife. Suites overlook the river where elephant and buffalo come to drink each morning.
