The Namib is widely regarded as the oldest desert on Earth, and the Namib Sand Sea was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.
The oldest desert on Earth
At dawn, the dunes of Sossusvlei glow in shades of apricot, crimson and rust, their knife-edge ridges casting long, sharp shadows. Climb to the summit and the silence is so complete that you can hear the sand shifting beneath your feet.
A desert safari is a journey into a landscape of extremes. The Namib Desert has existed for some 55 million years, and its wildlife has evolved remarkable strategies to survive: beetles that harvest fog, elephants that walk vast distances between waterholes, and lions that hunt along the Atlantic shore.
This is a different kind of safari. Sightings are rarer, and therefore more precious, and the landscapes themselves become the star of the journey.
Highlights of a desert safari
Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are the icons: towering dunes, some among the highest in the world, and a white clay pan dotted with camelthorn trees that died centuries ago and still stand, blackened by the sun.
In Damaraland, desert-adapted elephants and black rhino roam rugged valleys, while ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein tell stories thousands of years old. The Skeleton Coast offers shipwrecks, Cape fur seal colonies and haunting fog-bound beaches.
In Botswana, the Kalahari and the Makgadikgadi Pans reveal a different desert: meerkats, brown hyena and the vast, otherworldly salt pans under a limitless sky.
“The desert strips everything back to light, sand and silence. It is where many travellers finally hear themselves think.”
When to go
The cooler dry months from May to October offer the most comfortable conditions, with warm days, cold nights and crystal-clear skies. Desert nights reveal some of the darkest skies on Earth, perfect for star-gazing.
Summer brings hotter temperatures and occasional dramatic thunderstorms, while the Makgadikgadi Pans fill with flamingos after good rains.
How we plan your desert safari
Distances in Namibia are vast, so we choose between scenic light aircraft flights and expertly guided road journeys depending on your time and budget. We select lodges that blend into the landscape and guides who understand the subtle life of the desert.
A desert safari pairs wonderfully with Etosha National Park, the Okavango Delta or Cape Town for a journey of striking contrasts.
